在安裝時，客戶沒有選擇安裝kernel-smp，系統會缺省安裝為單處理器核心，用戶可以通過添加多處理器核心模組，將系統升級。
具體步驟:
1、啟動Red Hat Linux as 4，以root身份登錄，進入字符界面。
2、解壓kernel-smp-2.2.14-5.0.i386.rpm包，(方法很多可以進入光驅直接解壓，也可也將光驅的東西拷貝到共享目錄中)
#rpm –install kernel-smp-2.2.14-5.0.i386.rpm，加載多處理器(smp)模塊。
3、#mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0smp.img 2.2.14-5.0smp，創建初始化程序。
4、#vi /etc/lilo.conf，添加多處理器啟動選項，例如
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0smp
label=smp
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0smp.img
read-only
root=/dev/sda2
